Glad to see that women at least are asserting their legal rights and not staying on in oppressive systems where men use their surplus labor for their services; the least feminists can do is teach women their legal rights, Pupe understood her mother labor exploitation. Amazing how the oppressor makes the victim at fault via guilt! Also this same mercantilist class would not let Bengal flourish its industry, by monopolizing key products, so they look down on Uttio who stood up and built his own identity via his own labor... the cultural hegemony of this absentee landlord and mercantilist will probably see its demise through its own organic contradictions...
ReplyDeleteWhen I lived in Kolkata I never realized that the entire social structure like housing etc was based on both social and economic apartheid! It is interesting that Gora realized that after having lived a "middle class" life; the basic difference in simple things like utilities like use of primitive methods to like oven. is staggering.. the real class issue is coming out... Pupe has to re-think if she can really de-class herself if she wishes to share domestic space with Gora; even the staunch leftist who left their urban middle class homes could not de-class themselves in the 1970s. On the other side, the illusion is that middle class families are "inclusive", they definitely are not... specially for children and wives who do not even assert their rights to property... women's sexualities are controlled to perpetuate the class system. Probably, feminist movement to be more inclusive have to incorporate class, poverty, eugenics, and lack of entitlements within its vision.....
