In continuation of the dialogue with Mr. Tanmoy Roy, I am putting forth a different view about "slang" and Robithakur's songs. I shall start with a quotation from Gautam Bhadra Of Subaltern Studies: According to the Foucauldian intepretation of "slang" vs "elite" discourse, probably it is in the semoitics of the Street Parlance and Slang that lies the Subaltern langauge of resistance. We have seen it with African American Rap and Jamaican Rastafari Rap during the slave revolution and also against apartheid and racism; why cannot Robithakur's songs be used for street songs which is the language of the suablterns? What rationale is there for Robithakur to become a private property of the hegemonic elite Bengali mercantilist and ruling class? Surely, his "Stree Patra" shows a deconstruction of domesticity as does his questioning of the private and the public within the context of Nationalism in "Ghare Baire". Why is he stuck in the Ivory Tower of Sonar Tori?
